小說中的情節和人物雖然純屬虛構，然而卻以作家生活的現實世界為基礎。如發生小人國里的'種種荒唐的所作所為。無一不是以當時英國統治者的腐敗和罪惡行徑為原型的，因而具有深刻的現實意義。再如飛島國中的可惡行為諷喻的是英國對愛爾蘭的統治。這種手法運用得巧妙，并且不失嚴肅，給人以強烈的真實感。
